About

I am a literary critic and historian of Black and South Asian people in Britain and Europe. Spanning the period from the mid-nineteenth century to the present, I research and write about race, resistance, and revolution, focusing particularly on Indian anticolonialism, nationalism, and anarchism, as well as the contemporary legacies of colonialism, racism, riots, and human rights.

I am currently assisting Dr Alex Tickell with the editing of the Oxford History of the Novel in English, Vol 10: South Asia and South East Asia, and I was recently a Visiting Research Fellow at the Danish Institute in Rome, where my research concerned, first, Italian Risorgimento influences on Indian nationalism and, second, alliances and collaborations between Italian anarchists and Indian revolutionaries in early twentieth century Europe.

Funded by the Carlsberg Foundation and based in the Department of Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies at the University of Copenhagen, I completed a two-year postdoctoral research project in 2016 based on which I am currently writing a book entitled The Indian Revolutionary Movement in Europe, 1905-1918 (Liverpool University Press, 2019).

I hold a PhD (2012) from the Open University, UK, where my doctoral research concerned contemporary black and South Asian British literature. Extending this focus, I have recently examined issues of racism, riots, and human rights in a chapter for my co-edited book Reworking Postcolonialism: Globalization, Labour and Rights (Palgrave, 2015).

Alongside my doctoral research, I was Database Assistant Editor on the AHRC-funded project ‘Making Britain: South Asian Visions of Home and Abroad, 1870-1950’. I researched and wrote more than seventy entries for the project’s database.

I have recently held a Visiting Fellow in the Department of Politics and International Relations at Goldsmiths College, University of London, as well as in the Faculty of English Language and Literature, University of Oxford.
